Ivan is a silverback gorilla who lives in this circus and has been the center attraction of the mall for quite some time. During his stay at the circus, he has made friends with Stella the older elephant and Bob the stray dog who visits at night. Ivan is a curious gorilla who is a "famed" artist and loves to create artwork for the night custodian's daughter Julie. The circus owner "Mack" has been struggling with the steady decline of mall visitors and is not able to properly take care of the animals because of the decline. In efforts to improve the mall circus, he decides to buy a baby elephant named Ruby. Stella immediately takes in the frightened elephant and treats her as if she was her own. As time goes on Stella becomes very ill from a foot wound and ends up passing away. Before dying, she asks Ivan to help free Ruby by finding a way to get her out of the circus. Through Ivan's multiple attempts and getting Julie's help, he is successful in completing this task. Ruby and other animals make it to the zoo and eventually Ivan is able to move there as well. This story is about friendship and struggle. It also shows you that if there is a will then there is a way. By the end of the book everyone will fall in love with Ivan and cheer him on as he goes through his efforts to rescue Ruby.

Any animal lover is sure to love this book and would be excited to know that this was based on a true story. Students will be encouraged to go and even visit the real Ivan at the Atlanta zoo and see how he is doing. This story provides a realistic example for students to see where story ideas can come from, and they can even work on comparing the fictional story to the real life version. The One and Only Ivan is a must read for all!

Wonder is an 2013-2014 Texas Bluebonnet Award nominee. This realistic fiction chapter book follows the life of a child named August Pullman, who suffers from a facial deformity. Because of his deformity, August has struggled with making friends and fitting in. August has been home schooled his entire life and at the start of middle school, his parents decide to send him to school for his 5th grade year. The story tells about his challenges with bullying, making friends and trying to fit in despite his abnormal looking face. This novel also tells of his victories and how staying positive can take you places. Wonder is mostly told from August's point of view, but it also has several other narrators such as his sister and his school peers. It was interesting to hear the other narrators sides of the story and this really added more depth to the book, which aides the readers understanding of the characters actions and feelings.

Beauty by Bill Wallace is an older book, but it is still one of my all time favorite books! This book will tug at your heart! You will laugh and you may cry. Although this book is fiction, it was inspired by real life events of Bill Wallace. At eleven years old, his grandmother took him to buy a horse he named, Beauty.

Another wonderful and well written novel by Christopher Paul Curtis. Curtis' novels are excellent for Historical and Realistic fiction lovers. In this novel, The Mighty Miss Malone, Deza Malone is the comical 12 year old main character. She is full of life. It is here great spirit that carries her family and friends- and even herself through the hard times in Gary, Indiana.

Like so many of Curtis' other novels, The Mighty Miss Malone is set during the depression. The reader is able to feel the harshness of the times, but can also feel the tight bonds of a loving family.

Deza begins to find her way when her father leaves to find work in Flint, Michigan and the family is put out of their home. Through it all she learns to stand tall and proud.

This is am excellent novel to read aloud.
I stumbled upon this beautiful picture book by Crystal Hubbard as I was browsing my library. I was awestruck when I found this dynamic story- the story of Jimmy Winkfield. I had never before heard about this pioneer in Black History, although I have horse jockeys and race horse owners in my family.

The Last Black King of the Kentucky Derby, guides readers through the details of Jimmy Winkfield's life as he became one of the best horse jockeys in the world. Known by some as "Wink", Jimmy Winkfield is a two time winner of the famous the Kentucky Derby of 1900 and 1901.

Winkfield's life is chronicled in this captivating story showing the determination of a young boy growing up in segregated Kentucky in the late 1880's. Throughout the day Jimmy works alongside his parents and 16 brothers and sisters as sharecroppers, but his true love is riding horses. The author describes Jimmy as being "captivated by the big powerful animals" (Hubbard, 2008, p. 1), which is illustrated so well in the pictures. Wink gets his break in horse racing when an owner who could not afford an experienced jockey asks him to ride. It is this race that sets the precedent for the type of jockey Jimmy is. Despite receiving a year suspension, Jimmy Winkfield continued to train becoming one of the most sought after jockeys.

Jimmy encountered racism, suspensions, and conflicts during his years on the track, but he continued to race and love horses. After losing in the 1902 Kentucky Derby, Jimmy "Wink" Winkfield moved to Europe, racing for Russian czars, Polish princes and German barons. He died at the age of 91.

This is a must read for historyand horse lovers alike.
Living at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade, he has grown accustomed to humans watching him through the glass walls of his domain. He rarely misses his life in the jungle. In fact, he hardly ever thinks about it at all.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Instead, Ivan thinks about TV shows he’s seen and about his friends Stella, an elderly elephant, and Bob, a stray dog. But mostly Ivan thinks about art and how to capture the taste of a mango or the sound of leaves with color and a well-placed line.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Then he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from her family, and she makes Ivan see their home—and his own art—through new eyes. When Ruby arrives, change comes with her, and it’s up to Ivan to make it a change for the better

New to the Anderson Library and sure to follow in those Frisco ISD libraries that don't have it yet, Winter According to Humphrey is a TERRIFIC-TERRIFIC-TERRIFIC book in the words of Humphrey the Hamster (A.K.A. Classroom 26's classroom pet)! Humphrey the Hamster is back again narrating his latest adventures with Mrs. Brisbane's class. It's time for the Winter Wonderland program at school, and Room 26 has been chosen to perform two songs in the program for families and friends. Humphrey is there for all the preparation alongside the other classroom pet, Og the Frog. Readers will be amused by Humphrey's view of the students, their teacher, and the music teacher Ms. Lark, as they practice their parts and prepare their costumes. Will all go as PLANNED-PLANNED-PLANNED with all the support that Humphrey provides through his SQUEAK-SQUEAK-SQUEAKS? Read this COOL-COOL-COOL new book and tell all your friends how much fun it is!

I'm thankful for wonderful authors like Gordon Korman! Aren't you? Read on to find out about his latest novel...

The word "gifted" has never been applied to a kid like Donovan Curtis. It's usually more like "Don't try this at home." So when the troublemaker pulls a major prank at his middle school, he thinks he's finally gone too far. But thanks to a mix-up by one of the administrators, instead of getting in trouble, Donovan is sent to the Academy of Scholastic Distinction (ASD), a special program for gifted and talented students.

It wasn't exactly what Donovan had intended, but there couldn't be a more perfect hideout for someone like him. That is, if he can manage to fool people whose IQs are above genius level. And that becomes harder and harder as the students and teachers of ASD grow to realize that Donovan may not be good at math or science (or just about anything). But after an ongoing experiment with a live human (sister), an unforgettably dramatic middle-school dance, and the most astonishing come-from-behind robot victory ever, Donovan shows that his "gifts" might be exactly what the ASD students never knew they needed. Four mysterious letters change Miranda's world forever. By sixth grade, Miranda and her best friend, Sal, know how to navigate their New York City neighborhood. They know where it's safe to go, like the local grocery store, and they know whom to avoid, like the crazy guy on the corner. But things start to unravel. Sal gets punched by a new kid for what seems like no reason, and he shuts Miranda out of his life. The apartment key that Miranda's mom keeps hidden for emergencies is stolen. And then Miranda finds a mysterious note scrawled on a tiny slip of paper: I am coming to save your friend's life, and my own. I must ask two favors. First, you must write me a letter. The notes keep coming, and Miranda slowly realizes that whoever is leaving them knows all about her, including things that have not even happened yet. Each message brings her closer to believing that only she can prevent a tragic death. Until the final note makes her think she's too late.
"The Underworlds" is a four book series that will leave you rushing into the library to get the next book in the series!! Book One is entitled "The Battle Begins"
From the back cover: "Owen Brown is you average fourth grader. Or he was, until his best friend, Dana, disappeared. Right in front of his face. Through the floor of the school. Owen's average life has turned upside down. He's determined to find Dana--before anyone realizes she's missing. Owen sets out on a mysterious, mythological rescue mission with his friends Jon and Sydney. But what none of them know is that Dana's disappearance is part of a much larger riddle. Any they're at the center of it."
From Booklist, June 1, 2012:

Grades 2-4. Thinking back, Owen Brown recalls signs that the day was not normal, long before the floor opened up, swallowing his best friend, Dana. Owen and two new friends soon find themselves on a quest to save Dana from Hades and thwart Loki’s efforts to start a war in the Underworlds. With advice from the Valkyries (disguised as lunch ladies), Owen finds the lyre of Orpheus, which quickly dispels all danger. But although Owen’s innate ability to play the lyre stretches credulity, nonstop action with a dash of humor is the focus of the book, not careful logic and nuance. The series mixes Greek, Norse, Babylonian, and Egyptian mythologies and contains plenty of illustrations and a glossary to help struggling readers (though it lacks pronunciation guides). Written as a beginning chapter book, but with fourth-grade protagonists, it will appeal to both younger and older readers. The slim volume ends with a two-page introduction to the Underworlds series’ next book, which promises equal thrills and fast pacing.
Thanks to my friend, Josh, for recommending this book for our library collection. Horn Book (Fall 2007)

The clumsy crusader is back to protect LA from dastardly evildoers. Aside from a new bad guy, this fourth book is much of the same: Melvin watches TV with his pet rat, Melvin can't fly until the fifth try, Melvin saves the day. Silly details help the plot rise above mere formula. Energetic comic-book-style sketches accompany the text.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0
